34th Annual Karen Hornsbostel Memorial Time Trial Series

Participating in a bike race against the clock, called a time trial, doesn’t require expensive gear or racing experience.

Time trials are known as the “Race of Truth” because you race individually or as a team, trying to beat the clock. Some racers use special aerodynamic equipment and clothing to go faster, but any road bike is okay. Racers are divided by gender, age group, or skill level, and there’s even a “Retro” division where aerodynamic gear isn’t allowed. Time trials are one of the safest race categories since racers can’t ride too close to each other.

For just $20, you can enter your first race, and that includes the entry fee and a one-day USA Cycling (USAC) license. This fee is non-refundable and allows you to race on any available week. You’ll need a USAC license to race, which provides insurance coverage and supports the growth of bike racing in the U.S. But don’t worry, we’ll cover the cost of your one-day USAC license for your first race.

On race day, bring your road bike, helmet, sunglasses for eye protection, and some food and water with protein and carbs for after the race. It’s always nice to have a supportive friend cheering you on too! Just fill out the form, sign the USAC waiver, and pay the $20 fee for first-time racers.

On race day, arrive early (4:00 PM) at the registration table behind the Smoky Hill parking area. If you can’t make it by then, you can come anytime between 4:00 PM and 5:30 PM. Let one of our volunteers know you’re a first-time racer, and they’ll give you a start time and a bib with your racing number. Pin the bib to your shirt or jersey and head to the start line at least three minutes before your assigned time. A start marshal will be there to guide you through the process. It’s that simple!
